4 Must-Visit Places

1. The Walled City

The Heart of History

This is the historical center of Cartagena. It is surrounded by 11 kilometers of ancient stone walls designed to protect the city from pirate attacks during the colonial era. Inside, you will find beautiful colorful houses, flowery balconies, and lively squares.

Key Activities:

  • Walk through the iconic Clock Tower (Torre del Reloj).
  • Watch the sunset from the top of the walls at Café del Mar.
  • Take pictures with the famous "Palenqueras" fruit sellers.

Fun Fact: It took nearly 200 years to finish building the entire wall structure!

2. San Felipe Castle

The Guardian Fortress

Located on the Hill of San Lázaro, this is the largest and most impressive fortress built by the Spanish in the Americas. It was strategically constructed to dominate both land and sea approaches to the city, making Cartagena practically unconquerable.

Key Activities:

  • Explore the complex network of underground tunnels.
  • Enjoy a panoramic 360-degree view of the entire city and the ocean.
  • Learn about the legendary battle against Admiral Vernon in 1741.

Fun Fact: The tunnels were acoustically designed so that any footsteps inside would echo, alerting guards to intruders.

3. Getsemaní Neighborhood

Art, Culture and Rhythm

Located just outside the main walls, Getsemaní is the cultural and artistic soul of Cartagena. Once a working-class neighborhood, it has transformed into a vibrant hotspot full of colorful street art, murals, local music, and traditional food.

Key Activities:

  • Visit Plaza de la Trinidad to watch street performers and mix with locals.
  • Walk down the famous narrow streets decorated with hanging umbrellas and flags.

4. Rosario Islands

A Tropical Paradise

An archipelago located about 45 minutes by boat from the city. It is a protected National Natural Park famous for its white sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and coral reefs teeming with diverse marine life.
